installation art dedicated to highlighting the importance of sampling in hip-hop

this piece mimics the computer rooms we used to see in the aughts. the person who it belongs to spends hours and days cataloging the samples and interpolations of all of their favorite songs. they collect timelines of sampling machines as well as hosting a board where they can see the physical interconnections of songs, using a network map. the office is filled with cds and vinyls as well as artwork that serves as a mix of fabrics, sampling different facial features of important artists to the formation of hip-hop.

sampling is such a large part of the music industry that it even created a genre and sometimes even becomes an easter egg hunt for learned listeners. sampling is most recognized within the hip hop community, especially since it created the genre, but finding samples and interpolations is an activity that a listener of any genre or age can enjoy. this project is a visual representation of how all of these songs, new and old, acoustic and electronic, traditional and abstract, relate to each other, because art comes from art and the best musicians take notes from all over the world, from every genre, from every time period.
